ADA, FDI mark first ‘World Oral Health Day’

The ADA and the FDI World Dental Federation have declared Friday, Sept. 12, the first “World Oral Health Day” to boost awareness of oral health and its impact on general health and well-being.

“The American Dental Association is pleased to stand with the FDI and other national dental associations around the world to emphasize how crucial good oral health is to overall health,” Dr. Mark J. Feldman, former ADA president, said in a news release.

Added Dr. Feldman, “We also want to help increase global awareness about proven preventive measures, including oral health education, that can help reduce disease and suffering.”

The Sept. 12 date was chosen to honor Dr. Charles Godon, the FDI founder, who was born Sept. 12, 1854. It also marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s groundbreaking International Conference on Primary Health Care, held Sept. 12, 1978.

“We hope that awareness of the importance of oral health can be elevated through the worldwide recognition of this day,” said Dr. Burton Conrod, FDI president. “The dentists of the world are committed to helping each and everyone in achieving optimal oral health through prevention and the highest possible standard of care.”
