Study Suggests Dentists Can Identify Patients at Risk for Fatal Cardiovascular Event

A new study indicates dentists can play a potentially life-saving role in health care by identifying patients at risk of fatal heart attacks and referring them to physicians for further evaluation.

Published in the November issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association, the study followed 200 patients (101 women and 99 men) in private dental practices in Sweden whose dentists used a computerized system, “HeartScore,” to calculate the risk of a patient dying from a cardiovascular event within a 10-year period. ADA’s first experience with a Facebook – account

Something strange has happened to DentalBlogs.com. I think they have partially shut down their Facebook account. They no longer feature original articles such as those by Dr. Rhonda Savage and Ms. Linda Miles, and in the last couple of weeks, they eliminated their collection of photos. Now the site only features ads and press releases. Does anyone else wonder what happened? Sure you do! This is exciting. (more…)

US children miss out on the dentist

Most American children do not see their family dentist until they are well over 2 years old, far later than is recommended by both dental and medical professionals. That’s one of the key findings from a survey of American children’s oral health, conducted on behalf of Delta Dental Plans Association, an American provider of dental benefits says AAPD. (more…)

International volunteer programm

It was 1971 when the American Dental Association first published a directory of programs outlining the need for dental personnel and materials in a number of overseas communities. Since then, the participation by dentists and others in international volunteer dental activities has risen significantly. In that time, the organizations involved in placing volunteers overseas have also made significant changes in their programming. If you are a dentist or other dental professional interested in volunteering overseas, getting in tune with all you need to know can be a bit overwhelming. This website is designed to serve as your starting point. (more…)

ADA, FDI mark first ‘World Oral Health Day’

The ADA and the FDI World Dental Federation have declared Friday, Sept. 12, the first “World Oral Health Day” to boost awareness of oral health and its impact on general health and well-being.

“The American Dental Association is pleased to stand with the FDI and other national dental associations around the world to emphasize how crucial good oral health is to overall health,” Dr. Mark J. Feldman, former ADA president, said in a news release.

Added Dr. Feldman, “We also want to help increase global awareness about proven preventive measures, including oral health education, that can help reduce disease and suffering.”

The Sept. 12 date was chosen to honor Dr. Charles Godon, the FDI founder, who was born Sept. 12, 1854. It also marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s groundbreaking International Conference on Primary Health Care, held Sept. 12, 1978.

“We hope that awareness of the importance of oral health can be elevated through the worldwide recognition of this day,” said Dr. Burton Conrod, FDI president. “The dentists of the world are committed to helping each and everyone in achieving optimal oral health through prevention and the highest possible standard of care.”

Dentists work on reducing costs

Dentists are finding new strategies to combat the current economic downturn, according to the 4th ADA Survey of Economic Confidence.

They say patient needs are different now and they’re modifying their practices accordingly.

Sixteen percent of dentists responding reported increasing hours of operation and adding other services during the second quarter of 2009, up from 9.9 percent during the first quarter. More than one-fifth (20.6 percent) reported making cuts in areas including overhead during the second quarter, up from 18.7 percent during the first quarter of 2009.

Many are changing practice hours (sometimes decreasing the number of days but increasing the number of hours per day), hiring associates to expand services or extend hours, doing more bread and butter dentistry, cutting staff hours and fully utilizing assistants and hygienists. (more…)
