The ACE Scottsdale Meeting is approaching!

As many of you know, I used to have a reputation for going to EVERY CE event on the schedule.  I think that I had three years in a row where I attended between 300 and 500 hours per year.  That was just a little bit excessive, so I’m much more selective about what I attend these days. (more…)

Dentists Step Up Marketing as Patients Skip Their Visits

In the slowdown, even dentists are feeling the pinch.David Wong, who runs a private practice with his wife in Tulsa, Okla., has seen his business slip 10% since the beginning of this year. That has him spending more time marketing and less time cleaning or pulling teeth.Dr. Wong has upped his advertising, taking advantage of low newspaper and broadcast rates, and now sends email reminders to customers on top of traditional mailed postcards. He is even on Twitter, aiming to connect with customers as “not just the guy in a white coat with a drill in his hand.” (more…)

A win for us … FDA changes website

says Mercury-Free Dentistry

The first crack in FDA’s armor has appeared, folks.  This morning, FDA changed its website, adding this sentence:  “High levels of mercury vapor exposure are associated with adverse effects in the brain and the kidneys.”  (Go to http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/DentalProducts/DentalAmalgam/ucm171094.htm and scroll down to “Potential Risks”).  Prior to this, the website did not explain to consumers the damage caused by mercury at all. Health Care Reform, Dentistry, and Your Practice

As I look at discussions surrounding health care reform, I see a couple of issues surrounding dentistry that I think would have significant impact.  I’ve got a lot of questions – some of them rhetorical.  I don’t know the answers.  But I think it would be interesting to speculate, and I would be interested in seeing opinions from others. Chris Kammer’s World Domination Plan for Dentistry in Chicago tomorrow

This is the debut meeting tomorrow describing my plan to reach the public with the dental message in ways never before attempted or accomplished. I’ve been doing marketing and PR long enough to have finally figured it out. This is about world domination. This is about celebrity, music, entertainment, fun and a dash of hype. All important elements that have been missing from the dental message -but that is about to change. (more…)

Gum Disease is Killing Our Patients (and Our Profession is About to be Busted)!

Second opinions are common in health care; whether a doctor is sorting out a difficult case or a patient is not sure what to do next. In the context of our magazine, the first opinion will always belong to the reader. This feature will allow fellow dentists to share their opinions on various topics, providing you with a “Second Opinion.” Perhaps some of these dentists’ observations will change your mind; while others will solidify your position. In the end, our goal is to create discussion and debate to enrich our profession.

Let’s cut to the chase. Gum disease runs rampant through dental practices across the USA and a lot of it goes untreated. The epidemiological studies confirm its prevalence and the insurance companies confirm that we don’t treat it. With all of the extensive scientific research that includes thousands of studies over the last 10 years, dentists should know that preventing gum disease increases a patient’s life expectancy. But we sure don’t act like it.

For God’s sake doctors, pick up a damn perio probe! (more…)
