Dental Aid exists to provide accessible and affordable oral health care for low-income and uninsured residents of Boulder and Broomfield counties. Dental Aid was the first not-for-profit comprehensive dental clinic in the United States. Founded as a referral organization in 1974, Dental Aid opened it’s first full-service clinic in Boulder in 1980. Dental Aid has three clinics, located in Boulder, Longmont, and Louisville, and one satellite clinic located in the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. The Louisville clinic serves primarily children and youth. Dental Aid has the capability of using portable dental equipment to serve residents of long-term care facilities and homebound individuals.
In addition to Dental Aid’s clinical services, Dental Aid provides outreach oral health screenings to low-income children at preschools and elementary schools. Dental Aid’s oral health education program teaches all clinic patients, as well as children at childcare centers, preschools, and elementary schools, about the benefits of brushing, flossing, fluoride, good nutrition, and regular dental visits.
As mandated by our strategic plan, Dental Aid has increased its advocacy efforts at both the local and state level. The purpose of increased advocacy is to provide more community education about oral health problems, and to educate policy makers about the need for access to oral health care. By working in collaboration with other organizations, we can multiply the strength of individual voices.

Dental Educators Meet With Members Of Congress To Advocate For Universal Dental Coverage And Access To Oral Health Care
Advocates for dental education and dental research participated in the 2009 American Association for Dental Research-American Dental Education Association (AADR-ADEA) Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill yesterday. Representatives from dental schools visited 36 Members of Congress to advocate for universal coverage and access to oral health care in U.S. health care system reform. To achieve that goal, AADR-ADEA advocates urged Congress to make needed investments in dental education to ensure a robust, diverse health professions workforce. They also urged congressional leaders to support a 10% increase in the FY 2010 budget for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Have you or someone you know participated in International volunteer activities in the last 24 months?? The ADA believes that the personal effort and self sacrifice of Association members who serve as volunteers in lesser developed countries to improve the health of their people merits professional and public appreciation and recognition. In 1974 the ADA established a certificate program whereby individuals who meet the criteria established are eligible to receive a Certificate of Recognition. Component and constituent societies are invited to nominate their members (by March 31) who have served as volunteers during the preceding year. For more information click here or here
I just returned from a very interesting meeting in New York. It was sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences and the Children’s Dental Health Project (http://www.cdhp.org/). There were close to 70 people in attendance. To my knowledge, I was the only private practitioner there. Most of the attendees represented dental schools, health advisory groups and the major insurance companies. The University representatives were mostly the head of pediatrics, public health and behavioral departments in the Ivy League Schools of Harvard, Columbia, etc.
Over 20 years ago, my dentist brother Buddy, gave me a set of tapes by his then mentor, the late Avrom King. Avrom has his many problems but dumb he wasn’t as Coker can attest to. He then predicted three different tiers of dentistry and three different standards of care that would make up our profession. I don’t exactly remember the distinct differences between the three but it was mostly 1. Private care like most of us on Ace, 2. Insurance driven in managed care type policies and 3. a new class represented by a dental therapist. All signs from the powers that be show him to be right. Personally, I see no other answer. No one knows when it will be here but it is coming.
For those who are interested, here are a few of the people I had a chance to visit with:

Recently qualified dentists at this year’s Young Dentist Conference spent the day discussing their concerns about their future within dentistry, with a panel of other young business people at a similar stage in a variety of careers as well as with fellow dentists.
The expert panel of speakers included Neal Raval, a newly qualified dentist now working in Germany, Saaqib Ali winner of the FMC Young Dentist of the Year Award and James Hamill, a Northern Irish Dentist with an award winning practice. (more…)
