Apprentice Winner Speaks to Young Dentists

Described by Alan Sugar as a ‘great asset’, Tim Campbell will be talking to budding entrepreneurs at this year’s Young Dentist Conference.

Tim who won the first series of the TV show ‘The Apprentice’ will be presenting the lecture, ‘The Anatomy of an Entrepreneur’ on the 9 February 2008.

The perfect example of a young entrepreneur Tim, still only 29, spent two years working with Sir Alan Sugar and has now set up his own male grooming company, as well as a business assisting young entrepreneurs set up their own businesses.

The Bright Ideas Trust, Tim’s latest venture assisting fledgling businesses to get off the ground, was an idea that came to him whilst working for Sir Alan,

“Sir Alan Sugar has been my motivation in both starting a business and creating a fund for budding entrepreneurs to do the same.” says Tim, “Since winning ‘The Apprentice’, Sir Alan has been nothing but inspirational. From him I’ve learnt how to take risks.”

Tim is hoping to impart some of his insight to the delegates at the Young Dentist Conference. He shares the session, ‘The Anatomy of an Entrepreneur’ with a successful dental businessman, Mervyn Druian. A co-founder of three separate dental clinics, member of the BDA Advisory Committee, editorial panel member of FMC publications and a principal dentist on Extreme Makeover UK, Mervyn will discuss the role of entrepreneurial skills in dentistry.

The other two sessions will contrast the merits of corporate dentistry and the smaller, personally-owned practice, and finally will see some of the top names in British dentistry looking at what recent changes will mean for young dentists.

The Royal College of Physicians in London is the venue for this year’s event now in its third year. The Young Dentist Conference is tailored specifically to the needs of dentists in their first years following graduation.

As a nation, we’re notoriously bad at going to the dentist. – from mail online

Many of us are simply afraid of sitting in the dentist’s chair.

Others are not sure what they are entitled to on the NHS or fear they may not get a good deal from a private dentist. (more…)

Open Wide: Pioneer Dentist Gets His Due

    from the new york times:

When, as a child, I heard grandiose tales of my great-grandfather the dentist, I could have been forgiven for thinking that before he came along, dentistry was like something out of a sepia-toned comic skit, with mallet as sedative and crude pliers for extraction. And his arrival, in my imagination, instantly brought the modern dental office. But in this case, I was to learn, hyperbole and fact were surprisingly close cousins. For when I mention that fabled ancestor, G. V. Black, to dentists, roles are reversed and their jaws drop (though this has yet to translate into a free root canal). His statue stands in Lincoln Park in Chicago. And the reproduced office of the man considered “the father of modern dentistry” is a central feature of the National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore.
